Set Design

These projects were built during a recent lull in film work — a focused effort to sharpen the technical skills needed to come back at full speed. Throughout the work, Art Directors, construction leads, and foremen contributed advice that refined the methods and style.

Awkward Mansion

A complex set designed for deep practice with varied architectural features. The unusual base plan was chosen to push the management of custom grids. These drawings aren't finished — a snapshot a few weeks into the development of a complex set.

Photorealistic Visualization

Photorealistic visualization helps make decisions about set design and surface treatments. These renders happen inside the same CAD software that produces the drawings. Any necessary changes can be made and quickly reviewed, with the updates automatically reflected in all plans, sections, and elevations.

Lighting Simulation

For a set used in varied scenes, lighting simulation confirms that it will perform under different conditions. Detailed lighting simulation shows how surface treatments affect the shot under varying lighting.

3-Story Victorian Railcar Flat

Story: COVID times in San Francisco. The set was designed tight to enhance the story of a few very different characters trapped together in a large but narrow house.

Guard Shack

Architectural drawings for a compact, character-rich set piece.

Props

Math-driven design produces forms that are then realized by CNC. A specialty intersection between pattern work and physical fabrication.

Parametric Trim

One of the defining features of these Victorian flats — the trim. A set of scripts takes profiles from the trim catalog and applies them to colored guide lines, with extra parameters to set orientation correctly. Once the guide lines are placed, profiles can be quickly changed and visualized to meet the needs of the design team.
